I read this sometime as a young man and it made such an impression on me and many times I have thoughts that lead me back to this article by Leonard E. Read so that I just had to find it, read it again and now to share it with my readers along with my additional thoughts that it provokes. Let’s get started.

I am a lead pencil—the ordinary wooden pencil familiar to all boys and girls and adults who can read and write.

Writing is both my vocation and my avocation; that’s all I do.

You may wonder why I should write a genealogy. Well, to begin with, my story is interesting. And, next, I am a mystery— more so than a tree or a sunset or even a flash of lightning. But, sadly, I am taken for granted by those who use me, as if I were a mere incident and without background. This supercilious attitude relegates me to the level of the commonplace. This is a species of the grievous error in which mankind cannot too long persist without peril. For, the wise G. K. Chesterton observed, “We are perishing for want of wonder, not for want of wonders.”

I, Pencil, simple though I appear to be, merit your wonder and awe, a claim I shall attempt to prove. In fact, if you can understand me—no, that’s too much to ask of anyone—if you can become aware of the miraculousness which I symbolize, you can help save the freedom mankind is so unhappily losing. I have a profound lesson to teach. And I can teach this lesson better than can an automobile or an airplane or a mechanical dishwasher because—well, because I am seemingly so simple.

Simple? Yet, not a single person on the face of this earth knows how to make me. This sounds fantastic, doesn’t it? Especially when it is realized that there are about one I, and one-half billion of my kind produced in the U.S.A. each year.

Pick me up and look me over. What do you see? Not much meets the eye—there’s some wood, lacquer, the printed labeling, graphite lead, a bit of metal, and an eraser.

OK, let’s take a look at this. The author is speaking through the voice of an object, a pencil which is something that I agree, we do take it for granted. And granted, with the change of technology having us using pens more than pencils (can you remember the last time you actually picked up and used a “pencil”?) and any choice of all of the digital gadgets like smartphones and tablets, pencils seem destined now to reside in our desk drawers and used only occasionally. But the point is clear and can be applied to other objects we use. The pencil was deceptively simple in design; just wood, lead (carbon) and eraser and our gadgets which have evolved since still should have us asking, how was this made, why was this made and other questions. Questions lead to answers and answers lead to new things and new inventions and ways of doing things!

Everything in life is quite simple if we take the time to think about it and break it down into its parts. When we know this, we can then be confident in finding answers to “problems” of any kind. There all so many things in life but only a few “formulas” which are applied to all of these many things. Today take a close look at a pencil (or a cellphone or tablet); really look at it. Take 5 minutes and write down a few questions about it. Then research and find those answers. Just as a complex automobile, airplane or dishwasher (as the author states) may not be able to profoundly answer your question that the simple pencil, you’ll still be on your way to opening your creativity in other areas.

OK, and welcome back. Now let’s look at the basic gig offer (more detailed explanation).

BASIC GIG: Your one sentence ad is “mentioned” in the blog. Since I don’t “know” you and your offer, I am not “recommending” anything to my readers so they “appear” as “ads”. (However, just by being in my blog does implicate me as favoring your offer).

IMPORTANT: If you use the basic gig offer $5 (without a live, clickable link) be sure to be pretty descriptive so with your site name such as, “Save Hundreds of Dollars a Year on Imprinted Promotional Items at: MyImprintRepDOTcom”. People then know to type this into their browser.

How to Succeed at Anything

Put yourself in a box and fight your way out.

In today’s world you really don’t have to put yourself in a “box” because so many outside forces are doing that for us. And, sadly, many of us don’t realize that we are in a box of limitations that have been put on us because they are disguised.

I’m going to explain how we can get out of any “box” that we are in, whether it’s one we’ve created (and really we create everything which happens in our life) or that which has been placed on us; plus when we get out, we will be much, much stronger!

You may have heard this same story which I have about someone watching a chick struggle to peck its way out of its shell. Someone watching this was tempted to assist the young creature by breaking the shell open but a wise farmer stated that the person should not do so because if the chicken did not do this on its own that it would most likely die because this struggle strengthened the chicken. Has someone always given you things when you were a child, did you always “get your way”, did your parent always come to your rescue when you didn’t like someone or something and didn’t allow you to “struggle” so that now when you are older you find yourself “not strong, and dying”?

Currently there are many people on unemployment and/or welfare. They’ve not really “given up hope”; they’ve just become complacent and are now in a comfort zone; some to the point that they think all of this is now a “right”. I don’t want to get into that discussion here but I will tell you that if this is your case that you have put a ceiling on your potential and freedom. You are literally “tied down” to your circumstances. You are in this “box” that I am speaking of. Here’s one way to get out.

Accept any job, even if it’s a very low wage. People are more apt to offer a job to someone who is working than to someone who is not. Also when working you’ll meet people and make contacts for better jobs and also make the effort to find better employment while working. Create a goal to find a better job. Force yourself off welfare and food stamps (the SNAP card); give yourself 90 days. In 30 days live on 70 percent of your “check”, in 60 days; 50% and in 90 days, say “no more!” We don’t get ourselves in “trouble” quickly and we usually don’t get out of “trouble” quickly. We are like the frog who enjoys the warmth of a slowly boiling pot; if the water was already boiling we would feel the pain and jump out. We don’t notice the water is gradually getting hotter to the point that we get boiled to death! Unemployment benefits and welfare benefits are like the boiling pot.

Once you are out of the soon to be (if not already) “boiling pot” and you are earning income, then I recommend that you learn how the “rich” people think. One such person Dexter Yager (Amway fame) always kept the attitude that he was always broke (not poor) which he says helps him to never be complacent and motivates him to do more. This is the box he purposely puts himself in.

Boxes are OK as long as you are creating and in control of the box.

What are Bentleyville (Duluth MN) Dates and Times?

You and your date are enjoying a cup of hot chocolate with cookies in a chilly outdoor wonderland when she compliments you on your new favorite wool blanket shirt she bought just hours earlier for you from Duluth Pack, one of the many tasteful local shops. You notice another family is getting pictures taken with Ole Kris Kringle before heading back to Pier B Resort, a nearby and new addition to the area which is decked to the halls which will lead them to their beautiful and comfortable room overlooking this winter paradise. You hear kids laughing and singing while holding hands with parents, siblings and grandparents as they walk under an arched “tunnel” which covers them and the snow covered path in dancing lights.

This mystical and magical little town appears and lasts for only a couple of weeks every year and then vanishes to hopefully reappear the next year; but only if the children are good and make the “nice” list. You realize finally that you are in a very special little “town” nestled within the city limits of Duluth Minnesota but it’s more, it’s magic; it’s Bentleyville.

If you are a native of the zenith city, you’ll know that Bentleyville was brought to Duluth in 2009 from Cloquet Minnesota, which is just a few miles south on the main drag (Highway 35W). But many may not know of it’s very humble beginnings in Esko Minnesota way back in 2001 when it was created by Nathan Bentley; who some just considered an overenthusiastic fan of the holiday season. Locals would drive their visiting relatives by the place, and exclaim “this is the house with all the lights on it”. Nathan continued to add more stuff over time and then opened it to the public in 2003 as a “walk through” experience and even Santa visited on the weekends!

This really is one of those “crazy” things which start out small and people love it so much that well, according to history (holiday folklore?) it attracted more “lookers” and got bigger and bigger to the point that Nathan Bentley hired nine buses to transport people from a parking area to the entrance of his place. What would come to be known as “Bentleyville” offered a huge lit castle entrance, beautiful colored holiday scenes created from lights, entertainment and eventually regular visits by Santa, and those nine busses bringing in over 30,000 spectators every year. Long Christmas carol short, in 2008 Mayor Ness of Duluth called Mr. Bentley and said, “Duluth Minnesota is the place ‘ya otta be, so they loaded up the truck and moved to… sorry, I couldn’t resist, but it happened something just like that with the entire holiday roundup including the entrance castle, cookie house, popcorn building and all the fire pits coming to Bayfront Park which is located just off the historic and beautiful downtown Duluth city.

As a resident of the Twin Ports (I live in Superior, Wisconsin which is just across either of two bridges) I have a personal connection. No, I’m not one of the board of directors or the 600 volunteers who make this free event possible, but like you (or I hope like you’ll be) I am someone who visits this yearly color kingdom of lights that comes alive between Thanksgiving and Christmas. I enjoy the experience through the eyes of my grand-kids. They visit their Grandpa T and we eat popcorn together as we walk under the archway and stop at times to see the “12 Days of Christmas, the Nativity Scene, dinosaurs (who knew that dinosaurs like Christmas lights?) We do a group hug at the “world’s largest tallest, lighted” Christmas tree and then stop at the ice rink warming shack which doubles as a souvenir store at this time.

When you visit, you’ll recognize the tall colored castle entrance that invites you to walk its archway of lights to the world’s highest Christmas tree where you can do your group hug or start your own tradition. I promise you’ll see such a huge number of dancing and sparkly lights so numerous that even the smartest fifth grader could never count them and they are outnumbered only by the smiles on the faces of the over 265,000 yearly visitors; kids young and old.

If you haven’t been “enlightened” by any of the thousands who have already visited Bentleyville, let me be the first to invite you to “our magical shore” this next holiday season. Write it on your calendar and make plans. Come with your family, a group of friends or make it a business event! Going Through Hell is a Lesson in Giving

Think of your "going through hell" as a way of learning to give.
